Prospective Students

The Department of Religion offers the Ph.D. only.  The M.A. may be earned during Ph.D. study (see Requirements), but there is no terminal M.A. program.  Applications must be submitted electronically by The Graduate School’s due date.  Students are admitted for fall quarter of the following academic year.  Admissions decisions are made exclusively by the Department of Religion, in consultation with faculty from other departments depending on the student's subfield.

Applicants need not have an undergraduate major or minor in Religion but should arrive with significant background in the proposed field of specialization; they should also have begun significant study of field-appropriate languages.

Campus visits are highly encouraged either before application or at any point in the application process.  Admitted students are invited to a recruiting weekend in March, when they will have a chance to meet with current students and both Religion Department and affiliated faculty.
